Random Encounters

Ed and I are leaving the farm and moving to Tucson. Before we leave, we thought we’d take a little road trip with Hannah. After Yellowstone we headed into Utah to spend a few days with Brently. I really wanted to take Ed and Hannah by the Mapleton house. So we all piled in Brentlys’ car and he got us lost finding it. The main house was locked, but the cabin was open. We sat on the lawn and I recounted the stories about running around the house as a kid. Then Ed pointed to someone also walking around the house, and he asked “Isn’t that your cousin?” We turned around and who should it be, but David George. David was passing by on his way to the mid-west. It took us all by surprise, but we had a lovely time sitting outside the house and catching up. A few hours later, we all went our way. And for the next day all we could think is: What are the odds? So you should always stop by if you can, there is no knowing who you might bump into.

That is so crazy that you guys ran into each other. It's amazing how that house can bring people together. Leo was taken there by a friend before we ever met, and my best high school friend had her wedding reception there in the park with the gazebo. I too have fond memories of summers there playing hide and seek in the church, walking over to watch baseball games, and running through the sprinklers. Good times.

Did you see the "insane couch" in the cabin? It is a folding bed. I went with Morris (Grandad) to a house down the road and helped him pull it out of a gooseberry patch when he first moved the cabin there. In fact, I spent the night in the cabin once and slept on the insane couch. I felt like a real pioneer! I guess that just proves you don't have to be insane to sleep in a log cabin.
